Canada-Israel Industrial Research and Development Foundation to Provide 2.0 Million in New Funding for Joint Industrial ProjectsTuesday, August 12, 2008 CIIRDF Will Support Four Joint Industrial Projects that Combine Canadian and Israeli Strengths for Competitive Advantage Ottawa, July 17th, 2008 – The Canada Israel Industrial Research and Development Foundation (CIIRDF) will provide $2.0 million in new funding for four, industrial research and development projects involving Canadian and Israeli companies. The funding will cover up to 50 percent of the joint development costs of new products that have good commercialization potential in the global marketplace. Funding for each project is subject to final contract negotiations. The CIIRDF Board of Directors approved the funding last month in Canada, on the occasion of its 28th semi-annual meeting. Composed of three Israeli and three Canadian members, the CIIRDF Board has the final say on project proposals that meet basic eligibility requirements and have been subjected to independent technical and business merit reviews in Israel and Canada. This meeting the Board had 10 proposals to consider for approval and nearly all received very high ratings from both the Canadian and Israeli evaluators. Competition between the projects was fierce and only the very best were ultimately selected for funding. In addition to the 4 projects selected, several others were recommended for funding through the provincial routes and we expect to announce their details shortly after completion of that process. “In the thirteen years since I have been managing CIIRDF never have we had so many high quality projects to present to the Board”, said Henri Rothschild, President of CIIRDF. “CIIRDF is instrumental in helping Israeli and Canadian companies improve their competitive offerings and achieve faster access to global markets than they would otherwise do on their own,” said the Chief Scientist in Israel’s Ministry of Industry and Trade, Dr. Eli Opper, who chairs the CIIRDF Board of Directors. “This is driven home by IAI and MDA presently collaborating in a CIIRDF project and recently winning a major tender for the Canadian military.” The new projects represent strong additions to the CIIRDF portfolio of more than 40 previously approved projects at various stages of completion or in repayment mode. The projects will result in the development of intelligent video software for an integrated surveillance system, packs of smart miniature sensing robots, inkjet based printers to create efficient solar cells and noise reduction solutions for liquid computer cooling products. About CIIRDFThe Canada-Israel Industrial Research and Development Foundation (CIIRDF) was established in 1994 to promote collaborative R&D between firms in both countries. With a sophisticated research base to draw on in each country, Canadian and Israeli companies are well suited to form productive partnerships. CIIRDF’s President and a small staff are located in Ottawa, Canada. CIIRDF also maintains an office in Israel. The listing of the 4 funded projects is as follows:- 1. Detection and Identification for Video Surveillance Systems by InfoWrap Systems Ltd. of Jaffa, Israel & A.U.G. Signals Ltd. of Toronto, Canada InfoWrap and AUG have established a partnership to develop intelligent video software for an integrated surveillance system, called the Detection and Identification for Video Surveillance Systems. The proposed system will be the first to enable reliable, automatic outdoor moving object identification, even during the night 2. MAST - Mini Autonomous Search Team by O.D.F. Optronics Ltd. of Tel Aviv, Israel & Frontline Robotics Inc. of Ottawa, Canada. The product to be developed will consist of a pack of smart miniature sensing robots designed to perform a variety of mutual tasks with minimum human intervention by combining high sensing capabilities with software framework for the control of Packs of autonomous, collaborative robots 3. Printer for Solar Cells Production with a Revolutionary Transport System by XJet Ltd. of Rehovot, Israel & Meikle Automation Inc. of Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. The proposed solution replaces the screen printing process with inkjet based printers allowing the system to create an efficient solar cell and provide improved technology to solar cell fabs that will increase the yield and throughput, enabling a 30% cost reduction of solar cells. 4. Quietzone CPU Cooler by Silentium Ltd. of Rehovot, Israel & CoolIT Systems Inc. of Calgary, Alberta , Canada. The companieswill develop innovative liquid cooling systems with noise reduction technology for PCs, to overcome the noise constraints and enable maximizing of computer performance.
